Andrew Hange recently took the time to answer a few questions for me. Andrew placed third at state in cross country this year and it couldn't have happened to a nicer more hardworking runner.

How long have you been running?
I have been running since my seventh grade year in cross country.
What are some of your most memorable running highlights?
State participant: track and field-2003 (4x800 Relay with Mike Mack, Cale Sito, and
Nic Alvarez), and cross country in 2003 (65th) and 2004 (3rd).
GMC Team Champs-2001
Beating Jason Ordway (friendly rivalry) 2 times in cross country
High school and junior high cross country record
Who or what were some of your influences?
First time was probably going to my brother's meets, so I took it up. I liked it and had
success in it so I kept it up and worked real hard ever since.
What are your goals for the future?
Have a successful and healthy Track and Field season. Make it back to state, then my
ultimate goal is to be a state champion! Unfortunately, I do not plan to run in college,
but I do believe I will still run on my own.
How nervous were you for state? How did you relax?
I was not real nervous at all, to tell you the truth. I just kept my mind off the race the day
before, just relaxing in the hotel room. Watched TV and spent some time with Brooke.
The day of race, I did not really get too focused on the race until I got to the track. I ate
some breakfast, shared some quality time and laughs with friends and family.
How did you prepare yourself for state?
I looked on the internet for times coming to the state meet. I evaluated where I would fit
in and practiced extra hard the week of state to get my goals. I set the goal of bettering
my time from last year and also getting in the top 5 each race, that was a goal I had all
year.
What was different about state as opposed to last year?
I was much less nervous, knowing that all I had to do was run my normal race, and not
change anything. I succeeded with having a much better time and getting 62 places
higher this year!
Can you give a run down of how the race went?
Great conditions: cool and windy, just how I like it. I ran behind Ordway, like planned, let
him lead the race until I decided to pass him with a little less than 1 mile to go. I knew it
was my last race and gave everything I had.
What are your goals for track?
-set some more school records
-win GMC as a team
-win at least 2 individual GMC titles, along with District and Regional
-make it to state in more than 1 event and win a state championship
What are your plans for the future (outside of running)?
I will continue my education, probably either at the Ohio State University or ITT
Technical Institute, in the architecture or computer drafting fields.
What advice would you give to a younger runner who would like to do as well
as you?
First, believe! Then try your hardest each and every day at practices and meets. Set
some lofty goals to make yourself work harder and you will definitely become
successful.
You have been a great leader. What are some important things you think a
leader needs?
You have to have respect from your other peers. You must respect them and treat them
good with your best actions. Just have fun with your best actions. Just have fun with
what you are doing and stay out of trouble. Being a leader is simpler than you think and
whether you know it or not your a probably already a leader. note-Very well put,
Andrew.
Thank you Andrew for taking the time to answer these questions and giving
me the opportunity to coach you for the past 6 years.
